What is MDA?
The original SendGrid Labs experiment was called Multichannel Display Ads, or MDA for short.

Is there an API for SendGrid Ads?
No. There is no API for SendGrid Ads yet.

Will there be an API for SendGrid Ads in the future?
We may develop an API in the future, but we do not have a timeline for that.  We suggest using the UI if you are interested in using SendGrid Ads. If you are interested in this offering, let us know!

What is retargeting?
Retargeting is a form of online targeting advertising where people who have already visited your website or are a contact in your database (like a lead or customer) are served ads.

Retargeting is an effective way to drive additional action because these people have expressed some sort of interest or intent through visiting your website, completing an online form, etc.

What channels does SendGrid Ads support?
We support Facebook, Google Display Ads and Instagram. Our next channel will be Gmail Ads.

What’s the difference between this and creating ads in Facebook?
Creating your ad campaign on SendGrid has a number of benefits over creating ads directly on Facebook.

  1. Use your customer’s interaction with your email to send highly targeted ads.
  2. Easier and simpler account setup and syncing between SendGrid and Facebook.
  3. Unified audience creation across multiple channels like Facebook, Google Display Ads, and Instagram.
  4. Simplified ad creation process.
  5. One (and beautiful!) view on your campaign results.


What is a lookalike audience?

A lookalike audience uses a list, like an email list or a list of your Facebook page fans, and creates another list of people who have similar traits. You can then use this larger list to find new customers who are similar to your current customers.

Can I upload my own contacts if I haven’t sent an email through Marketing Campaigns?
Yes! On the SendGrid Ads dashboard, there is a Contacts tab that will allow someone to upload their own email contacts list.

Where are my ads going to be seen?
Your ads will be seen depending on which channels you choose.

  • For Facebook, your ads will be seen anywhere on
  • For Instagram, your ads will be seen within the Instagram app.


In Facebook, can I create carousel or multi-image ads?
Not at the moment. This is a feature we hope to add in the future. If you are interested in this offering, let us know!


How do I know if this is going to make me money?
Understanding how your marketing dollars affect your revenue can be a challenging task. This is known as attribution, and it is a difficult problem to solve.

We recommend approaching marketing with a test-and-learn mindset as it is impossible to know how individual marketing tactics will work for your specific marketing goal(s). There are some many variables that can affect how marketing will impact your business, like time of year, creative execution, landing page details, and many more. Every case is unique, and while there are general principles that you can use to improve your marketing, it takes some effort to figure out which combination of marketing tactics work for you. 

We recommend making sure that you have marketing goals before you start running campaigns. That way, you will have some baseline to compare against when you start running your campaigns.

We also recommend that you install the SendGrid Tracking Script on your site before you run a campaign. It will give you the best possible look at how your campaigns are affecting your business.

How long should I run a campaign to know if it is working?
Because every marketing situation is different, there is not a general answer for this question. Believe us, we wish there were!

The main thing to keep in mind to answer this question is that marketing on the Internet effectively takes time in order to allow the individual channel (Facebook, Instagram, etc) to optimize your campaign based on the results you are looking for.

In other words, these systems need data and results in order to run your campaign most effectively. That means it takes some investment from the marketer, both money and time, to get the best results from your marketing.

At a minimum, we recommend running a campaign for at least a month at $10 a day to start to see results. However, it make take shorter or longer for your individual campaign to begin to generate results.


What is this going to cost?
The cost for running campaigns through SendGrid can be broken down into two parts:

  1. The cost to the run the ads on each individual channel, like Facebook or Instagram. This is known as the media cost.
  2. The cost to use SendGrid to run the ads. This is known as the service cost.

The amount of each individual part will be dependent on how much advertising you intend to do each month.


When do I become a paying customer?
You become a SendGrid Ads customer when you submit at least one campaign and it has served at least one impression. You will be charged thereafter on an ongoing basis on the 1st of the month once you have submitted a campaign, regardless of whether any of your campaigns are active.

What happens if I cancel all of my campaigns?
If you cancel all of your campaigns, you are still qualified as a SendGrid Ads customer.

If you cancel all of your campaigns, you are still qualified as a SendGrid Ads customer because we store the data about your account and campaigns as long as you are a SendGrid Ads customer. 

What happens if my campaigns are rejected by the ad channel?
If an ad channel (i.e. Facebook or Instagram) rejects your campaign, for whatever reason, you are still classified as a SendGrid Ads customer. It is up to you to either resolve the issue with the campaign by editing it, or you can cancel the campaign and create a new one.

One exception to this policy is if you submit your first campaign and it is rejected because of an error by SendGrid, then you will not be considered a SendGrid Ads customer.

SendGrid Ad campaigns are subject to the terms, conditions, and policies of each ad channel that you run a campaign on.
